Raid 5 PowerEdge Perc 6/i 1 disk failure 2 discs Foreign

1- I have tuned on my computer to find this. 1.jpg

2- I read forms and watched youtube videos for 4 days. I opened the panel and saw that the plug was not on 07. I then selected ctrl R. Then I received this.2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg

3- I then purchased a new 2TB hard drive and put it in the Raid while it was on and then made the new disk in slot 03 a global hot spare. I followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLOy3lhBsg0    The rebuild never started. Here are the Images. 5.jpg6.jpg7.jpg4- I don't know what generation PowerEdge server I have. I looked https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln294897/how-to-identify-which-generation-your-dell-p...

So I saw this blog https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-HDD-SCSI-RAID/HD-Failure-possibly-more-than-one-Unsure-how-...

Which says to download OMSA. I have downloaded SLI_3.0.0_A00.iso from   https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/4/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=C31J4 and have made it into a bootable iso.

5- I have booted into the Linux gnome and launched the Server Admin link. I signed on to my local host. This asked me for a username and password. I don't have a password on this server. So I could not boot in.

6- I have seen this on youtube (Foreign config on raid array) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GynzgzQdAu0&list=PLWMppbGoBlCnnzlvlBRPKDmuCOPn63gDj&index=12&t=0s

and also reading this form   https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-HDD-SCSI-RAID/HD-Failure-possibly-more-than-one-Unsure-how-...

I have concluded that I should import the foreign config. Is this correct? Is there anything else that I should do?

Re: Raid 5 PowerEdge Perc 6/i 1 disk failure 2 discs Foreign

Noodlelord,

You would indeed need to import the foreign, and if that doesn't work due to the changes you may need to retag (delete and recreate VD as previous configured without initialization) the Virtual Disk. A good rule of thumb with foreign configurations is that if a Virtual Disk is bootable with a foreign you would clear the foreign, if the Virtual Disk is not booting with a foreign then you would need to try importing the foreign.

Re: Raid 5 PowerEdge Perc 6/i 1 disk failure 2 discs Foreign

Hi, thank you for the quick response last time. Importing the Raid did not work so I went for the retag. I deleted the VD then I went to build a new VD. I added all my drives and then selected the add hot spare. When I went to the hot spare page there was none available. I realized that I cant add all drives to the array. I hit cancel. On VD Mgmt page there was a percentage indicator where you would hit fast load or rebuild. (I might have that name wrong) I noticed that I did not have my hot spare and thought to not add it in my array this time. I deleted this VD and started over. I then saw that my drive 6 was foreign and says Virtual disk 255. Drive 6 says no error in the S.M.A.R.T status. I don't know what this means and I can not get it back in my RAID. Could you help me on this? 8.jpg9.jpg10.jpg

Re: Raid 5 PowerEdge Perc 6/i 1 disk failure 2 discs Foreign

What you would need to do is reconfigure the Virtual Disk, you would need to do this with the 5 working drives, as well as the replacement. This is because you need the same amount of drives as it was configured with previously, and since the one drive failed you need another disk to retag with. Once you create the 6 drive VD you do NOT initialize it ( that will format drives and you will lose data), once the VD is created then you have to remove the replacement drive before you try to boot. You do this as there is no data on the drive and loading the VD with it will corrupt the data. Once you boot successfully then you can try reinstalling the replacement while the server is up, and see if it will rebuild.

Re: Raid 5 PowerEdge Perc 6/i 1 disk failure 2 discs Foreign

Hi Chris,

I rebuilt the raid with 7 drives since I can not get that drive 6 back in from foreign. I removed the new 3rd drive with no data on and restarted. I put the new 3 drive back in and the drive started to rebuild. This took probably 8 hours. I restarted and no operating system was found. Do you know how to get this drive 6 back into my raid? It should be there. I had a hot spare which was drive 7. So total of 8 drives in my raid 5 configuration.

In the controller BIOS you can clear the foreign for the disk, but you may want to consider data recovery as well, as rebuilding the drive may have caused data loss and anything further could cause more. With the one VD member still being in foreign and the drive was rebuilt without it, then the data wont be intact. You normally want to wait to rebuild it until we powered it up to the OS.
