iDRAC version question

I'm kind of a new using iDRAC/Lifecycle to update my customers' servers, so please bear with me.

I recently worked on a couple of PowerEdge T620 servers and updated the various components' firmware using iDRAC (using F10 at the POST screen). Before doing this, I did upgrade iDRAC in the Windows environment to the latest version 3.3. This was all per suggestion from a Dell tech on an unrelated incident.

Everything went fine on the T620's, but now I need to do the same thing on a number of slightly older PowerEdge T610 and T410 machines. I vaguely recall the tech telling me if the iDRAC version was too old, I may need to perform an intermediate upgrade before upgrading to the latest version. Not sure if I heard him correctly though.

My questions are:

1) How do I find out the current iDRAC version? Is this found after pressing F10, or can this be obtained in the Windows environment? (I'm not in front of a server at the moment).

2) If the version is too old, would that require me to first upgrade using a "Legacy" Lifecycle controller (like version 1.7.5)? If so, how old is too old? Or is it just safe to just upgrade to the latest v3.3 regardless?

Any other tips to help someone new at using this feature would be appreciated.

Thanks.

RE: iDRAC version question

Hello.

1) How do I find out the current iDRAC version? Is this found after pressing F10, or can this be obtained in the Windows environment? (I'm not in front of a server at the moment).

This information can be found by booting into the LifeCycle Controller (LCC) or  within the iDRAC web interface using a supported browser and iDRAC IP address. Under server information, the iDRAC firmware version will be displayed.

2) If the version is too old, would that require me to first upgrade using a "Legacy" Lifecycle controller (like version 1.7.5)? If so, how old is too old? Or is it just safe to just upgrade to the latest v3.3 regardless?

You will have to gradually step up the upgrade up to latest version along side the BIOS. The latest iDRAC version is 2.85. See link on Embedded Server Management: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/poweredge-t610/drivers Using Platform Updates in the LCC, other iDRAC versions will also be listed.
