iDRAC7 express setup

I've got some Dell R720 servers and they have the iDRAC7 express installed on them by default.  I'm trying to get them configured but have a question real quick.  It is my understanding that you can only use the dedicated iDRAC port on the back of the server if you have an enterprise license (which I dont).  So I'm attempting to set it up and during NIC select I get LOM1 and LOM2.  I understand that means Lan On Motherboard.  I'm guessing LOM1 = NIC1 LOM2 = NIC2, etc.  So do I select the NIC that I already have configured and connected to my switch or do I pick a NIC that isn't already configured?  I'm guessing I want the NIC that is already configured or else it would then be a dedicated NIC and would kind of defeat the purpose of have the enterprise dedicated IDRAC port.  Thanks

Williamc671,

The ports are dictated by the iDrac installed. The Express requires the port to be configured as Shared, where the iDrac Enterprise is Dedicated. This is because the Dedicated port is part of the Enterprise add-in itself. So there isn't a way to use the Dedicated with the Express, as it isn't present.  With Shared the iDrac Express will share NIC 1/2 with the standard network traffic. The Dedicated frees up the Nics to  use all their speed for traffic alone. Plus it allows you to configure the iDrac connection to be set on a different network from normal traffic, increasing security. With the Express the LOM assignment does correspond with the matching NIC port.

The Dedicated port can be identified on the server by locating the port with the Wrench over it.

Hope this clears things up for you.

Correct, I understand about the dedicated port, it has a plug over it that says License Required.  I just wasn't sure if I was supposed to select LOM1 since that is what my current network traffic goes through, but it sounds like thats what I'm supposed to do.  I'm waiting to hear back from Dell on the cost of an enterprise license and may go that route before setting up the express portion.  Thanks for the feedback.

You can use ANY LOM port for iDRAC share mode. In this case you can either use LOM 1/2 which is already connected and configured on the server. You can also use LOM 3 or 4 for iDRAC shared traffic. You can not assign any of the LOM port only for iDRAC traffic. It will be share across iDRAC and Host.
