memory rule

Dear Team,

i went through the memory configuration of dell r730 server.In that for the single processor configuration
memory capacity of 144gb is as A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6,A7,A8,A9,A11.

Actually why we need to add   memory  in A11 instead of A10.Since A10 is channel 1 and A11 is channel 2

what is the reason why we are not going for six 16gb and  six 8gb DIMMS for achieving 144gb

Also whether mixing of different capacity is only for 8gb and 16gb or we can mix any two different dimm capacity.

Thanks in Advance

Alunkal,

The reason you populate A11 and not A10 is the memory channels matching. When populating the channels, minus the diimm in question, you have a single gap on the right side of the CPU, while having 2 to the left. So adding to 11, give you 5 per side.

Now in regards to mixing,

  • You can mix DIMMs with different capacities.

    • Population rules require the largest capacity DIMM be placed first.

    • Maximum of two different capacity DIMMs allowed in a system

Now with mixing 16gb and 8gb, you face the following limitation. 16 GB DIMMs must be installed in slots numbered A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8. While 8 GB DIMMs must be installed in slots A9 and A11.

Let me know if this clarifies things for you.

Dear  CHRIS,

Thanks for your reply.As you mentioned the reason for populating A11 instead of A10 is because of the symmetrical dimm configuration on both sides of CPU then for the below memory configuration as per the owners manual are not symmetric.

8gb ->A1,A2
24GB->A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6
48GB With 8gb dimm ->A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6
96GB with 16gb dimm->A1,A2,A3,A4,A5.A6

Also you mentioned than different capacity DIMMS can be mixed.In the owners manual  for 32gb DIMMS

the configuration shown is  32*12 .So can we go for  32gb*6 and 16gb*6 memory configuration

thanks
