power edge 6800 power supply

I recently picked up a used poweredge 6800 power supply on ebay, when i received it I went to plug it in and I dont think its engaging. It makes a "switching" or "clicking" noise, but the lights and fans arent working. After I unplug it, it will also click twice about 10 seconds after.

I am thinking maybe a bad unit or my outlets arent letting it engage?

Failsatheals,

The first thing I would look at is taking the server to the MInimum to Post configuration. That would be removing everything from the server but the following items;

  • 2 x 256 MB DIMMs in Bank 0 (Slots 1A and 1B) on a Memory Card
  • Memory riser in Slot 1 (MEM A)
  • CPU1 inserted (with heatsink)
  • One Power Supply
  • Backplane and Front Panel connected, if the last power state was "Off"

If the server powers up under that configuration then individually start adding back the removed devices to see if you can ID the part causing the issue. If it doesn't boot then power off and reseat each of those listed items to ensure connection.

Also, are you seeing any amber lights, either on the server or on the power supplies themselves.

Let me know what you see.

I only have the power supply, nothing else.

No lights illuminate on the power supply at all.It just clicks and depending on the outlet I use in my studio, my actual house lighting will flicker once.
