vSAN - replace the PERC H730 mini with the HBA330 mini/mono

We have a cluster of PowerEdge R730XD Servers with the PERC H730 mini RAID controllers. The drives are 6TB SAS drives and they are configured in pass-through mode as we run VMware vSAN.

We recently found out that VMware strongly recommends using the HBA330 controllers for vSAN.

We plan on replacing all of the PERC H730 mini/mono with the HBA330 mini/mono as suggested by VMware.

The question is: Can we just swap the controller and it will recognize the drives and be able to read the existing data or do we need to completely evacuate the data and recreate the vSAN disk groups in VMware?

Hope someone has been through this already and can provide insight.

Thanks,

Robert.D,

The first thing I would highly recommend that you do a complete backup before doing anything.
Next would you clarify if you are indeed referring to the HBA330 (no raid support) or the H330 (raid controller)? As both have greatly different configurations and support.

Let me know and we can proceed.

Thank you.

Hi again,

Just to clarify, the current PERC H730 mini controller is currently in HBA mode and the 6TB drives and the SSDs are in Non-Raid mode.

Cheers,

Hi,

Yes, the HBA330 (no raid). This is the recommended controller for vSAN on a Dell server. We haven't purchased them yet. Just doing the planning right now.

Yes, everything will be backed up.

Thanks,

Hello Robert.

Do you have an answer to your question? We are facing exactly the same situation and we would like to know if you have replaced the controllers without evacuate data from hosts.

Thanks.
