I want to upgrade a powerdge 2800 from windows 2000 server to 2003 sbs or 2008sr2

I am using the server as a domain server,  and have active directory- have 100 users on it - can i upgrade to 2008r2? i have one processor running on it and 4gb of memory- should i upgraded to the second cpu and more memory? can i even do the upgrade? do i have to also buy the 100 user licenses?

or

should i upgrade to win 2003 sbs server and do i have to buy the user licenses?

Thanks for your advise......

You can upgrade from 2000 to 2003 or 2003 SBS (unclear about 2003 R2 or 2003 R2 SBS), but NOT to any flavor of 2008 or 2008 R2.

The server can be upgraded to a second processor (provided processor model, stepping match exactly) and up to 16GB of RAM at anytime - whether this is worth the upgrade, depends on your infrastructure and what you need it to do.

I do not believe 2000 CAL's will work for 2003, but I'll let someone more versed in older licenses give you a definitive on that.

Should you update to 2003?  What do you hope to accomplish by upgrading?  What is it you need?

trying to cut costs, update the OS instead of buying a new server.....but then end of life for 2003 is about two more years, right?

I haven't seen any definitive date, but at least 2 years is probably safe.
