Installing windows gets stuck

Hi,

I recently brought a 'Dell Poweredge 1850' it has 2x 73Gb HDD, I have tried to install 'Windows server 2008' (Not R2) however, when I go to install the OS it will freeze on copying windows files it will usually stop at '55%' I have no idea why this happens, I have downloaded the copy from Microsoft website so it isn't pirated ect, I have configured RAID correctly with RAID 0. Can somebody please point out why this isn't working!

Thanks!!

I saw this once with a bad DVD drive, however, here are a couple of things I would try:

  • Download the ISO again.
  • Burn the ISO to DVD again.
  • Check the hash or use a download manager to ensure integrity of download.
  • Burn the DVD at a slower speed, using different software, or a different drive/PC.
  • Install from USB instead of DVD.
  • Try a different DVD drive.
  • Make sure to leave all RAID defaults intact and be sure to Initialize after creation.
  • Make sure your RAID/PERC firmware is up to date (BIOS and ESM first).

I would strongly recommend against using RAID 0.

I have tried all of these except from:

  • Make sure your RAID/PERC firmware is up to date (BIOS and ESM first).

How would I update these?

You can:

  • Find an OS you can install and update from the OS.
  • Boot to SBUU/SMTD, choose Update Firmware, then insert SUU as the repository.
  • Create a bootable custom repository using Repository Manager.

There is a good chance the native drivers in Server 2008 require more recent firmware.

I have tried all of these

You tried installing from USB? What happened?

Do you think, if I disabled RAID in the BIOS it would work?

Ok thanks,

If I was to try and install windows server 2012 on this and disable RAID, will it pick up my drives? Or will I have to install the raid drivers as well even though its disabled?

Disabling RAID "may" work ... you could try that.

Aside from the firmware, I might suspect one or both of your drives are bad.

You could also try configuring only one disk in a RAID 0 at a time and installing to it, or try a RAID 1. (Be sure NOT to mess with RAID settings like stripe size, etc.) Also, try letting the Initialization fully complete before attempting.

1. You are probably better off using 2008, as it is fully supported on this server.

2. Up to you. You can try disabling RAID, but there is no guarantee it will install any better than in RAID mode. In SCSI mode, you give up the performance benefits of RAID. Updating firmware may be required in either case.

3. If you set it to OFF, that turns off the entire SCSI subsystem. SCSI Enabled turns on the SCSI subsystem. RAID Enabled overlays RAID functionality over the existing SCSI subsystem.

What do I do with the backplane driver?

So, I have a couple of question(s).

  1. Do I do this in server 2008 or server 2012
  2. Do I enable or disable RAID
  3. If I was to disable raid do I put it to OFF or SCSI enabled

No, with it disabled, it is as though it doesn't exist, but you will likely need the backplane driver:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=KTK5F&fileId=3460879358&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=poweredge-1850&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SN

Server 2012 is not officially supported on the 1850, but if it is like the 2850, it will run it (non-R2) fine - you'll just need to use the 2008 R2 drivers.

Download and run it to extract the contents, then put the contents on a flash drive. When/if Windows gets to the point that it can't find any hard drives, click on the Load Drivers link and browse to the driver files on the flash drive.
