PowerEdge T410 - software upgrade to 2008 64bit

Hi

I purchased this server in 2010, I already had Windows 2003 licensing via a Microsoft MOLP agreement. I recall that I had to download a Dell Boot disk specifically for Windows 2003 to enable installation. I am replacing windows 2003 with Windows 2008 64bit very soon. What Dell pre requisites will I need to download and prepare. The server has a raid controller but I am not sure which one.

Regards

John

The Dell installation utility does not "enable" installation of an OS, but it can simplify it, as it contains and installs all the drivers regardless of the hardware your server was configured with, as well as asking you how you want your RAID and system partitions set.

OpenManage Systems Management Tools and Documentation (SMTD) is the installation utility you should use (make sure to follow the instructions on the download page for each ISO):
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=68RWT&FileId=2731101038

Boot to that DVD first, then follow the prompts for installing the OS.

You can also install directly from the OS DVD, but that will require knowing which RAID controller you have, configuring RAID before installation, loading the driver (if necessary) at the appropriate time, then loading and installing all other drivers and utilities (like OMSA) after installation.

Delete any Dell cookies (unless you did not select to Remember selection - then you can simply do it again), and choose "For Single File Download via Browser" this time ... don't use Download Manager.

It's not purchaseable from Dell, that I know of.

You can try these direct FTP links:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/secure/sysman/OM_6.5.0_SMTD_A01.iso.001
ftp://ftp.dell.com/secure/sysman/OM_6.5.0_SMTD_A01.iso.002

If your Internet connection is not very good, you might consider a third-party download manager (Dell's is worthless) to ensure the integrity of the connection and the download.

Fixed it ... I hate that the forum software shortens URL's.

Thanks, I managed to download both images using FTP. Do I create 2 DVD's from these images ?

"make sure to follow the instructions on the download page for each ISO"

You need to create a single DVD ISO image from these two ISO's ... you need to merge the two files using the copy /b command at the Command Prompt.

It looks good so far, just copied both files into one iso file. I was just commenting how long the end to end process is. Thanks John

btw, one can purchase the OpenManage subscription kit for a year, and they would send you the quarterly SMTD disk that you just downloaded and the Server Update Utility disc. Unless they changed the kit.

It is a bit convoluted, but it supports nearly every server Dell has (that is still worth having deployed).

Rey is right ... they do have an OpenManage subscription, but I didn't mention that because I think it's silly to pay hundreds of dollars for the subscription ... just for the DVD.
