move installed Win2KServer disk to an other server

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge 600SC with a SCSI disk, with Win2000Server and some soft installed  . If i get a same server , can I move the disk and adapter and restart Win2KServer without trouble ? Or is Windows Server installation "linked" to the machine (i.e by a CPU ID or something else ?

In theory, yes, you can.  I would make sure that ALL the hardware is the same between the two (no different expansion cards, etc.  It would also be ideal if the BIOS between the two machines were the same.

The trickiest part will be with Windows.  Windows will sense it is working with different (although the same) hardware and may tell you it needs to re-activate.  Complications could arise depending on the licensing on the computers and the method of installation of Windows.  Do they have the same COA labels on them?  Was Windows installed using retail or Dell OEM media?

I don't believe Windows 2000 used product activation. If memory serves, Microsoft didn't introduce that till XP/2003.

The rest that theflash1932 mentioned I agree with though :emotion-1:.

You're probably right ... very little experience with 2000 ;)
