R420 and MD1220

R420 and MD1220

I used Open Management Server Administration on Server1 to configure the Raid6 on the MD1220. I have a second R420 (Server2) also with a Perc 810 connected to the MD1220. How do I get Server2 to see the array that Server1 created?

      Thanks.

Hello dflatl,

With the MD1220 if you are wanting to have 2 servers connected then you will need to put the unit into Split bus mode so that half of the drives can be seen by each server. What you are trying to do is not going to work with an MD1220 as the configuration is held on the PERC card in each server. Now if you had an MD3220 then you could cluster the servers together & have the virtual disk seen by both hosts as the configuration is held on the raid controllers in the MD3220.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Sam L !! I want to run redundancy so I will split the MD1220. We are running Server 2012 R2, Will 2012 clustering work with this? Will windows on Server 1 replicate the data on it's raid to the raid on Server2? Sorry for the question, my background is from the UNIX side. So essentially I want Server2 to be the backup to server1. Thanks!

Just an MD1k-series attached to a PERC in each server will not allow a shared-storage cluster.

Like Sam mentioned, if you wish to have a cluster setup with shared storage and failover, you're going to need to get an MD32xx-series unit, and could then, if desired, daisy chain your current MD1220 to the MD32xx SAN. You'd also have to replace the PERC H800s with H200s (SAS HBA) as the raid controllers are in the MD32xx and you cannot have a raid-only (PCIe) controller communicate with another raid controller (in the MD32xx).

Thanks for the reply. Looks like we are going to get an NX3230, which should do the trick to get sharable storage for the entire network. I'll then use the MD1220 in split mode for available storage for either our R420's or R620's.
