Connecting MD1220 to 3220 Split vs Unified

We've recently purchased a MD1220 and have an existing 3220. The 3220 is in split mode, with redundant connections to 4 hosts using it for a Hyper-V cluster. I didn't configure this device. I plugged it in, unified mode, two cables - and when it booted up, the MDSM app told me that I needed to change an Enclosure ID - after some research, I decided to try it - everything is optimal now but I don't want to start using the 1220 storage until I know I've got it right. I want a redundant connection between the 3220 and the 1220. The two OUT ports on the 3220 are split across the controllers (1 per controller) and the two IN ports are split on the 1220 - so do I need to put it in split mode? The manual says: "Split-mode configurations do not support daisy-chaining of enclosures and redundant paths" - not what I want :)

Hello nromyn,

With the MD3220 the split mode function is not supported. Also you are correct in that the MD1220 needs to be in unified mode before you power on the MD1220 so that it can be seen correctly by the MD3220. Once your MD 1220 is cabled up correctly to your MD3220 then you should see the extra space from your MD1220 & then you can assign the new space to any virtual disk or disk group that you wish.

When you run the MD3220 in split mode you are making it so that both raid controllers will only see half of the disk in your MD3220 per controller. When you attach the MD1220 to your MD3220 & try to use split mode it will not display the disk correctly & will cause more issues then leaving the MD1220 in unified mode.
