Expansion options / limitations for PowerVault DL2000 & DL2100

I have a customer who has a DL2100 connected to 2x MD1000 SAS enclosures, using Symantec BE2010 as their D2D Backup solution at the primary server room.  For the Secondary server room, they have a DL2000 connected to 1x MD1000 SAS enclosure.

They now wish to purchase additional SAS enclosures for their existing investment and do not wish to rip 'n' replace what they have.  The challenge is that the MD1200 / MD1220 is not supported with the DL2100 / DL2000.  So, as a result; I am seeking alternative solutions that will enable the customer to satisfy their immediate storage expansion requirements, but will also enable them to transition away from the DL2100 & DL2000 head-ends.

My initial thought is to provide the customer with MD3600f's and HBA's for the DL's at each site.  That way, the MD3600f will support MD1200 / MD1220's for expansion going forward.  This would enable the customer to continue with their existing investment for another year, we can then take a holistic view to an alternative backup solution.

Some thoughts and or comments would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Hello PDP-8,

Based on your setup that you are describing if you wanted to get the MD3600f that will work with the DL2100 & DL2000.  Once you connect the MD3600f to the DL you will need to manually configure the new drives but once that is done you Symantec will be able to see the new D2D.  let us know if you have any other question.

Note that the DL-series are hosts using the MD1000's for direct-attached storage.

The MD3k-series are SANs and would need a front end (host) to be able to use it. This will likely run higher than direct-attached storage, but does give you more flexibility (you can replace the host if ever needed for an upgrade, or just add a host if you have another server needing some storage space).

Be sure to read up on the different connection options for Dell's MD-series SANs; SAS, iSCSI and Fiber channel.
