Issue connecting PowerEdge R630 to PowerVault MD 3220
Hi,
We are in the process of upgrading some of our server and have an issue whereby we cannot get the new R630s to communicate with our MD3220.
What is strange is that the new servers have joined our HyperV cluster fine and we can see the shared clustered volumes within the Windows cluster but when we try and configure the Dell Modular Disk Storage Manager it is unable to discover the SAN. Looking at the Storage Manager on one of the old R610s the SAS port IDs of the new servers do not appear in the Host Mappings tab and the ports to which the R630s are connected show as down in the "Hardware" tab.
The R630s have 12Gb HBAs installed and we are using SFF8644 to SFF8088 cables to connect the servers to the SAN. It is my understanding that although the HBAs are 12Gb they will negotiate down to 6GB when connected.
Can anyone point me in the direction of where the issue might be on this please?
Thanks in advanced.

Hello temples-90,
Have you configured out of band management on your new servers? If you have out of band management configured can I get a support bundle from your MD3220? How have you cabled your MD3220 to your server?
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Yes we have access to the SAN to gather support logs. How should i send them to you?
With regards to the cabling, each R630 server has a single HBA with 2 ports. 1 port is connected to the a port on each of the controllers in the MD3220.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Temples-90

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The support bundle from our SAN is on it's way to you as per the detail in your PM.
There are no lights showing on either end of the links between the SAN controllers and the R630 servers. The lights are on for the links between the SAN controllers & the old R610 servers though.
Thanks,
Temples-90

Hello temples-90,
Looking at the logs we are seeing that there are 4 connections going to your MD3220 and all are showing as online. Can I get you to take a picture of how your cables are connect on your host and your MD3220? Also, can I get you to reboot your controllers one at a time to see if there is any change.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Support, I have same issue, I purchased R630 and MD3220, I purchsed this cable below and also the SAS 12GB external controller. But there is no blink light on either on back of the server. Please, help ASAP.

Hello @YasirTanoli,
Here is the deployment guide for your MD3220, I would follow this to make sure that you have setup your MD3220 correctly:
https://dell.to/2Isy2N6
You also will need to have 2 cables per controller cabled to your MD3200.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Support, I have followed the guide, I installed 12GB SAS card into R630 and used a 6GB SAS cable and insert into R630 and MD3220. First of all, is R630 compatible to work with MD3220 systems? if Yes. Then do you think this cable, I need a 12 GB SAS, but card on MD3220 is 6GB, i believe or card might be bad on R630, as there is no light when I plug the cable into both systems. There is no light at all, no green no orange, nothing.

The cable needed would be part # 1502C, it is a 12gb to 6gb cable, everything should function using that cable.
Let me know if this helps.
