MD1000 enclosure and HBA card not showing disk address.

Hello,

One of our server is using a LSI HBA 9205-8e to access two Dell MD1000 disk enclosures. The server is running a Debian squeeze (6.0.7) amd64
and the controller firmware is flashed with the latest IT version. We are using the sas2ircu tool to access information on elements on the controller bus
(enclosure, disk). We tested with both the Debian standard kernel (3.2.0-0.bpo.4-amd64) and a special kernel we builded (3.8.3-2). Unfortunatly, the LSI HBA cannot access the disk address information. When querying the card information, we can access to all the information
(disk array, disk serial, ...) but the sas2ircu tool does not provide the correct disk address on the bus. The command only show enclosure:0, slot:0 for each disk. We installed a Solaris (Illumos) kernel on the hardware and queried the controller card with the Solaris version of the sas2ircu tool. All the information were
available except for the disk addresses. It show enclosure:0, slot:0 for each disk. Are your aware of any incompatibilities between an LSI HBA 9205-8e (IT firmware) and disk enclosure Dell MD1000 ?

Regards.

Re: MD1000 enclosure and HBA card not showing disk address.

Aegiap,

What it sounds like is a configuration issue as the MD1000 has to be connected to a RAID controller. This array needs to be running with either a PERC 5/E or PERC 6/E controller. Below is the link for the support matrix that shows all of the supported configurations.

Please let me know if you have any other questions and I would be happy to assist.

Re: MD1000 enclosure and HBA card not showing disk address.

Hello Kenny K. and thank you for your reply.

AFAIK Perc {5,6}/e card does not allow the user to use the disks in the enclosure as JBOD. As JBOD is mandatory in our setup, these SAS card will not help.
