MD1200 + H800 w/4TB Drives

Does anyone have experience with 3 or 4TB drives in a MD1200 w/ H800?  Looking at the documentation (ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md1200_Reference%20Guide_en-us.pdf) it looks like 2TB drives are the largest "supported".  Will the MD1200 recognize all 3/4TB of a 3/4TB drive?

Thanks for any feedback!

The MD1200 is just a disk enclosure. It doesn't care about the drive size.

The question should be; does the PERC H800 support 3/4TB drives. The answer to this is that it does support (enterprise class) drives over 2TB (Dell sells the combo).

Obviously; don't use desktop class drives in a setup like this.

Dev Mgr, thanks for your response.  Do you know if we were to go with a PERC 6/e and MD1000, would enterprise class drives over 2TB work?

Thanks

No, the PERC5 and PERC6 adapters (or SAS6/SAS6iR) did not support physical drives over 2TB. With the right cable you might be able to try an MD1000 attached to a PERC H800, but that's not a supported combo (by Dell) and you would need the right cable for that (not hard to find with Google, but not available from Dell as that combo was never offered).

If memory serves, you'll need an 8088 to 8470 SAS cable.

Google has several hits for this.

As the Wizard of Oz would say: Not so fast! Not so fast!

If you install, for example, Seagate ST4000NM0023 drives you will have no problem. If you install Seagate ST4000NM0014 drives they will come up as "BLOCK" in the BIOS RAID configurator and you cannot use them- at least on older versions of the PERC H810 that we have.

The difference is the the model ending "0014" is newer, and rated at 12 Gbps. The 0023 version runs 6 Gbps. I don't know if that's what makes the PERC unhappy, but it sure makes me unhappy!

I don't know if the H800 has the same issues, but I would be cautious.

You should also say that to connect a MD1000 to a H800 is official not supported. So it will may work but it is not tested.

Regarding this DELL have a RAID-Controller Support Matrix:

I use 12Gb 6TB drives in my MD1200 controlled by a H800 with no trouble.

Hi Indy - did you happen to have any issues with your PERC H800 not seeing any physical drives in the bios config utiltiy?

ljubobo,

As seen on the matrix found here, the largest drive offered for the MD1200 is a 10TB SAS drive, and there are some 6TB drives listed as well.

Let me know if this helps.
