Migrating MD1200 from a Dell 2950 to a New Server R720

Hi All ,

We want to migrate one of our Windows servers to a new hardware from Dell 2950 to Dell R720

The Old Server is connected with a Dell MD 1200 .

How should we go about connecting the MD 1200 with the new server

Will the New server recognize all the volume and data as it is or will the data be lost and MD1200 needs to be reformatted ??

Hello ivaibhav,

What you will want to do is to move the Raid controller that the MD1200 is connected to in the PE2950 to the R720.  Make sure that the controller card is seen on post & check the controller bios & all virtual disk should be present & online.  Once all virtual disk are online then you should be able to boot into your OS and see the virtual disks.  Now you may have to change your drive letters as they could change.  Last as always make sure that you have a backup of all your data just in case there is any issue you can do a restore.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam , Thanks for replying , You mean to say that we need to take out the RAID Controller card itself

Wont it work with the New Raid Controller Card in R720 , Would it save some sort of existing configuration  ?

Hello ivaibhav,

Yes the configuration is saved on both the drives & the raid controller.  Now the best way to move it is to move your controller card with your MD1200, with that being said most PERC cards as long as you are going to a newer card the configuration can be imported and seen correctly.  What version of PERC card are you moving from in the PE2950 & which PERC is installed in your R720?  I am guessing that you are running a PERC 6/e in your PE2950 & that in your R720 you have a PERC H800 but like I say that is just a guess at what you may be running?
