PowerVault MD3820f HDD Impending failure

Hello.

We have PowerVault MD3820f with 21 HDD's. 20 HDD in RAID10 and 1 Hot Spare.

Disk number 3 is failed and wrotes  MDSM -  "Impending failure (reported by physical disk)".

I have 2 questions:

1. Bad HDD now in storage. How to activate Hot Spare drive? Now it's in standby mode.

2. We bought HDD but with another firmware. HDD model Seagate ST1000NX0453 FW N004. But need FW NS02. How i can update firmware on this drive and it's real or not?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Guram2405,

What you can do is to go to the hardware tab & select drive 3, & right click and place drive offline.  When drive is placed offline then your hot spare will take over.

If your replacement HDD doesn’t have a Dell part# on it then it will not work in your MD3820f.  You also can’t upgrade the firmware on a non-Dell drive to have Dell firmware on it.  Here is the link to the support matrix & if you look on page 20-26 we list out the support HDD and there Dell part#. https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/powervault_md34xx_md38xxif_supportmatrix_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

2. About firmware: i found some links

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=7hy3h (upgrade HDD firmware from windows, linux, etc)

https://www.dell.com.mx/support/home/in/en/inbsd1/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=f13g8 (upgrade HDD firmware in storage)

My hard drive is ST1000NX0453 are in Matrix list, but i have different firmware N004 (not NS02). This drive's firmware can't be upgraded?

Hello Guram2405,

You want to use the prepare for removal as that will put the drive in an offline status.  Does your replacement drive have a Dell part# on it that looks like the following DP/N:0NWH7V?  If your drive doesn’t have a Dell part# on it then it will not work in your MD3820f.  You can’t just match drives by using the manufactures model#.  If your replacement drive does have a Dell part# on it then you can use this link as it has the latest firmware updates for all HDD & SSD for MD38xx systems.  https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=R2GNY

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
