Reset MD3600i Storage Array

Hi All,

I have recently purchased a second hand MD3600i Storage Array, and I am trying to reset the array configuration with no success.

I have tried to connect via the serial interface but I am unable to get into the base configuration. It does not receive a break command to bypass the start-up, I have tried a direct serial port connection and also a USB Serial connection with multiple applications;

Send <BREAK> for Service Interface or baud rate change

So is there any other way of getting this to respond or is there a certain key sequence to get this to break?

Second question is there any way of knowing which interface is what on Controller 0 or 1 as the configuration seems to show an IPv6 address on start-up which does not help me in an IPv4 configuration. I need to identify which interface is the management interface on controller 0

Any help would be appreciated as I would like to get this working asap.

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

Hello Stimpy555,

To reset the unit what you can do is to reset the password first on both controllers then you can go into MDSM and remove all virtual disks & host mappings.  To reset the passwords on the back of the controllers there is an orange latch & there is a button under the latch if you press that button it resets the password on the controller.  You will need to do this to both controllers to be sure that the password has been reset.  Once that is done then you can login to the management port default IP 192.168.128.101 & 102. If you have not installed MDSM( Modular Disk Storage Manger) then will need to do so you can access the management port.  Here is a link to download it if you need it.  http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/powervault-md3600i?driverId=JJW99... Once into the controllers then you can remove all virtual disks.

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

My problem is getting into the MDSM.

I have attempted setting up a separate IPv6 LAN and also a direct cross over CAT5e cable to the management ports with MDSM to automatically detect the array with no success. I have also tried manual detection on the IPv6 address with no success.

I was wondering if there is anything I can do on the software configuration SD Card on the Controllers. Is there a way to modify the configuration files for the startup to set a new IP Address for the Management ports?

Thanks

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

Hello Stimpy555,

Here is how to access the CLI to reset the IP’s. Once into the controller you can follow the options to reset the IP address to IPv4.  You will need to do this to both controllers as well.

1. Startup a terminal emulation program like putty, teraterm, minicom or hyperterminal using these terminal settings (115200-8-n-1).

2.         Send a from the terminal shell. This is accomplished by <Ctrl><PAUSE/BREAK> within HyperTerminal or Putty, use <Ctrl><A><F> from within Minicom on Linux systems.

3.         When prompted for input within 5 seconds, press <S> for the service interface menu.

Only capital "S" works here, lowercase "s" will not be recognized for this command.

4.         The user will then be prompted for a password. The Password is: supportDell

5.         The menu options available are.

    1) Display IP Configuration

    2) Change IP Configuration

    3) Reset Storage Array (SYMbol) Password

    Q) Quit Menu

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

This has been my problem, I cant get the Array to respond when trying to send the <BREAK> signal. I have tried with a Direct Serial Connection and also a USB Serial cable with multiple terminal applications.

Is there anything else I can do?

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

Hello Stimpy555,

If using the serial came that comes with the MD3600i the setting of 115200-8-n-1 should let you in.  If you are using the usb serial adapter then you need to change the settings to 9600-8-n-1.  It should attempt to connect & if you hit the space bar it should verify the setting are correct to access the controller and if not then it should adjust them automatically if using Putty.  If you are still not able to gain access via serial then there is no other to get into the unit.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

Do you have a Part number that I can order a Serial cable for the unit. As I have been using a Serial cable from a Modem that I used to have. I had considered that this may be attributing to my issue, but I am able to see the data coming from the unit.

I have tried to get my local Dell reps to loan me a cable temporarily to test but they don't seem to have one.

Thanks

Re: Reset MD3600i Storage Array

Hello Stimpy555,

Here is the dell part# for the correct cable.  If you google or search ebay for the part# you should be able to find plenty of places that are selling the cable.  Dell's part#MN657 or CT109.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
