Tape won't eject

I have 4 Dell PowerEdge 2600 servers with Archive Python 06408 SCSI tape drives. We are using the W2K NTBACKUP utility to perform nightly backups.

These servers are all experiencing the same symptoms.

Occasionally, when we go to change the backup tapes in the morning, the backup tape will not eject from one of the tape drives. Sometimes both LEDs on the drive are on. Other times both LEDs are off.

The only way to get the tape drive to respond is to power off the server, count to 10 and turn it back on.

When this happens, according to the W2K logs, the backups complete. However, no NTBACKUP logs are generated.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

A couple of things to look at.

- What scsi controller is the tape drive attached to? If it is attached to the onboard Perc4/di controller you may wish to update the:

There was an issue with an earlier version of the firmware on the controller.

- Theoretically you can place a tape drive on the second channel of the perc4/di, but it is not recommended putting any tape drive on any perc controller. You best bet is to get a Adaptec 39160 scsi controller and put the tape drive on that.

- if they are already on 39160 scsi controllers, check the bios and driver from the adaptec site for updates of this controller. People never seem to update this little thing.

cheers and good luck
