Dead System Battery = No Boot? T3500

The system battery on the mobo is failing.

If it dies, will the computer still boot?

The system battery is a small coin cell battery that can be replaced easily and cost $1 or $2 at any store that sells batteries. See your manual-- Dell Precision T3500 Service Manual

Just go to the page for Battery. Computer will not boot without it.

" But many mobos only depend on the battery to store time and nothing else, so the computer will boot fine with a dead battery."

That is false.

Battery is not optional for 3500.

Right. But many mobos only depend on the battery to store time and nothing else, so the computer will boot fine with a dead battery. You'll have to reset the system time.

What I'm trying to find out is which is the case with the T3500, A17 Bios.

Many models will not boot if the battery is dead.

It could boot fine, it could have unpredictable issues ( like refusing to boot if the power cable is unplugged / plugged back ).

Given the negligible cost of a new cmos battery, there's no reason to avoid changing it, I think

Well, I'm going to find out whether the computer will boot with a dead system battery.

Tried to replace the system battery.

But pressing as hard as I dared - or even as I could - on the tab to release the ring holding the battery didn't work.

Something has fused the ring. (Even managed to bruise my thumb trying.) Ad using the suggested small screwdriver didn't work either.

So I'll find out what happens when the battery finally dies.  ):-

Would recommend removing it... it's not exactly normal that "fuses". and an expired and depleted cmos battery ends leaking acid.

The acid damages the board

Since pressing as hard as I can doesn't release the ring holding the battery, and therefore I can't remove the battery, how am I to replace it?
