Dell T7910 Power supply light stays on but won't boot

Jump to solution

I installed a second CPU into my Dell T7910 Workstation. They are both the same CPU, and both CPU's work when used seperately, however when I have both installed and plug into the power supply (825W the max power supply for this workstation); the green light on the power supply as well as the HDD light on the front panel light up and stay lit, but pressing the power button does nothing. Is there anything I can do that will make this work?

Hi Tautech,

What model of CPU are you using?

Are you following the memory population rules?  https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/precision-t7910-workstation_Owners-Manual_en-us.pdf (page 60)

If you could let us know, thanks.

Two 16 Core xeons I don't know the exact model number. And yes, I am following the memory population rules.

Without knowing the CPU details I can't say for sure but it's probably a power issue or possibly even a bent pin on the 2nd CPU socket. Most dual CPU configurations of the T7910 shipped with a 1300W PSU (Dell part numbers: V5K16 or T31JM)

You could try disconnecting all components but the CPUs and memory to see if you get any diagnostic indicators:

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln295099/a-reference-guide-to-the-precision-workstati...

If, after removing components, you still don't get any power button activity when trying to power on, it would suggest an issue with the 2nd CPU socket.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks, that worked, When I looked at a manual I had read that 825W was the max so I went with that, but I plugged in a 1300W and it booted up.
