This model is quite old and only works with LGA 1155  32nm  Core I7 2600. Intel Core i7-2600 SR00B Desktop CPU Processor LGA1155 8MB 3.40GHz

Hi , I have a similar model of Dell , Dell Precision T1600 , Currently having GPU /graphics card , NVS 300/PCIe/SSE2 and with cpu model : Intel® Xeon(R) CPU E31245 @ 3.30GHz × 8 .. I am considering upgrading the graphics to meet my deep learning model training need in ubuntu . I wonder if i can upgrade to some of the recent models such as  : GeForce  GTX 1070 , GTX 1080 , GTX 1060  .. I know this question was asked some where in this community but it was with different model. I dont want to buy recent model and run into compatibility issues  or other issues which may affect the performance  ..including PCI or any other hardware compatability. I greatly appreciate your reply on the supported/recommended model

I thank you in advance

I have a similar system and have been looking into that same question. You need to check two things:

1) If you system only has a 285w or 300w power supply, like mine does, you can't upgrade to any of the GTX 1060 and above. You might be able to use the 1050ti if you have a 300w power supply.

2) For most of the cards you mentioned, you will have a tough time finding one that fits the case. Most of them are two slot cards which overlap the PCIe x1 port. If you don't need that port then you only need to check the length and height of the card fits the case

Speedstep neglected to mention that many Precision T1600s were produced with Xeon E3-1225 and E3-1245. The budget model with i3-2100 (passmark 3679) can greatly benefit from a CPU upgrade to the E3-1200 series. A unit with an E3-1225 (passmark 5918), however, will benefit less, even with an E3-1290 (passmark 8699). One with an E3-1245 (passmark 8048) will hardly benefit enough to warrant the effort.

Having written that, this is a 2011-vintage system with a dead-end 1155-equipped motherboard and it will be electronic scrap in the not-too-distant future, just like its cousins, Optiplex 790 and 990.
