“I210 Gigabit Unprogrammed” on Dell T7910

I've recently noticed that one of the two Ethernet ports on my T7910 is not functional.

  • The Windows Device Manager shows the following device with a missing driver:

Ethernet Controller

Device ID:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1531&SUBSYS_00008086&REV_03
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1531&CC_020000

Compatible:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1531&REV_03

  • I've looked at another T7910 PCs and I expect "Intel I210" there (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1533&SUBSYS_06191028&REV_03).
  • Googling suggests that "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1531" belongs to "I210 Gigabit Unprogrammed".
  • Intel I210 FAQ explicitly says that "I210-AT–0x1531" is "hardware default, indicating an unprogrammed device".
  • Further googling suggests that "intel gigabit ethernet "unprogrammed"" is almost always related to "I210" (here's one of the results).
  • Some people had been trying to find a driver for "VEN_8086&DEV_1531" e.g. I'm probably not the only one with such an issue.

 So, my questions are:

  1. why might have this happened?
  2. is it possible that some Dell BIOS update was the cause?
  3. how do I fix this?
  4. is it possible that flashing a newer BIOS update would fix this?
