T3600 windows won't see any drives

Hi, How on earth do I get a T3600 with windows 7 or windows server 2012 R2 standard to recognise any hard drives beyond the C and DVD drives? I'm not using the perc controller, I tossed it and I want to use the 6 sata ports on the motherboard. I am very frustrated with this. the C600 drivers are installed and supposedly working, but there is an exclamation mark next to the SAS controller. Been through the BIOS and played with many many settings, but nothing when windows boots.

I put in a linux drive and the extra drives are there and I can see them, so they are active in the bios, so this seems to be a uniquely windows issue.
