X5460 stepping difference

Dell t5400 with xeon x5460 stepping 12 (can i add another one same model but with stepping 6?)

Hi @Selim2255 ,

Not sure what do you mean by stepping 12 or 6. As per wiki information, stepping code should be a combination of a letter + a number. For Xeon 5400 series, stepping code should be C0 and E0 only. You may refer to cpu-wrold for more details.

And as per a Dell Tech mentioned in another thread, the X5460 that was compatible and shipped with the Precision T5400 has the S-Spec code SLANP, and that is C0; while E5450 that was compatible and shipped with the Precision T5400 has the S-Spec code SLANQ, and that is E0.

You cannot mix stepping.

They must be matched or you will have issues.

They change stepping to address design defects or errors known as errata which may cause the product to deviate from published specifications. 

The Core stepping is one of many specific specifications.
