7550 RAM Issue

Got a weird issue with installing RAM in new Precision 7550.  Trying to max it out (128GB).

Came with 32gb (2x16gb) installed under keyboard.

4 new chips, 32gb each.  I can install any of the 4 chips in the slots in the back of the laptop just fine, it will then show 96GB of RAM.

But replace the 2 16gb chips with any of the 4 32gb ones - and I get the 2 amber 5 white flash (memory error).

Have reseated and swapped them around, all 4 chips work just fine, just the system does not like you changing the 2 under the keyboard.

Any special system reset that needs to be done to accept these?  I am at a loss for why they cant function there, but soon as I stick the old chips in - back to solid.

Thanks!

I finally had a chance to test all the ram, all chips individually test fine, depending on slots. The Primary slots (under the keyboard) would only accept either or both of the original chips (16gb 3200). The other 2 slots (in the back) accepted all 6 chips.

So with the factory shipped ram - i was maxed at 96 gb 3200 speed.

I decided to buy and try 2x32gb 2933 RAM.

Success. I can place this RAM (2x32 2933) in the Primary slots in the system, and the 2x32 3200 RAM in the secondary slots. 128gb x 2133 is what BIOS now shows.

So Its something to do with those front slots accepting 2x32x3200.

But no worries - this config works just fine! I am happy with the setup as is. Latest BIOS and drivers are all installed. Just an odd deal

Yes slots under keyboard (I think they are listed as A and C) have 2x16 3200.

Rear has 2x32 3200 as well.  This works.  (Which is odd since you only show 64gb 3200).

Of course - when I go to the site - I can't even order this config any longer - as I have the i9 chip, and the i7s (and Xeon) are the only CPUs, and 2933 the only speed available.

So odd.

rob_gillis70,

Are you  still using the 2X16 GB that came with the system?

First - like I said - it works fine in the slots on the back of the system.  System came with 32GB (2x16) I added the 2x32gb in rear slot and system now shows 96gb (32 under the keyboard and 64 in back).

I can put any of the new 32gb chips in the rear - they all function fine.  But if you put any of them in the slots under the keyboard, the system no longer boots.  This means all 4 sticks are fine to the system (or else it would recognize them in the rear).  But for some reason, placing them in the shipped slots fails.  No message on screen, just LED flash for memory error.

They don't work if I use just 2 of them alone, all 4 of them, or if I put 2 new sticks under keyboard and move old chips to rear.

Its like the system is locked into expected 16gb chips in those slots and fails to accept anything else.

Now then - your statement/config above is odd.  My configuration - WORKING configuration -  is 2x16 3200 and 2x32 3200 = 96GB 3200 RAM.

That is not covered in any of your configs.  Are you saying you cannot put 128gb in unless youi lower the speed?  Odd that your config says max of 64gb at 3200 - yet I am on 96gb.  Can you explain that?

rob_gillis70,
Make sure to try updating Bios here
also loading Bios defaults, memory dance (trying one chip of RAM on every slot) and ensure that the problem is only affecting those ports under the keyboard. If the original RAM works in those ports, you may need to try a different set of RAM other than one you are trying.

rob_gillis70,

Following up to see if the issue with the memory is resolved? Let us know.

Welcome to the Dell Community @rob_gillis70

I know it should not make a difference but, do the 4 SIMM's have the same number of chips per side???

Best regards,

U2

Yeah, bought all 4 at once.

I got a feeling it's the 2933 vs 3200 speed limitations.  Granted, specs say even 96gb at 3200 should be impossible...

I finished updating BIOS and other items.  Work laptop so can't test all the chips yet as suggested, but will do soon as I can.

Having 96 vs 128 is a first world issue for sure, but I did speed money on those chips

Hi all,

Similar issue with precision 7750,
i7-10875H

Came with 32gb (2x16gb) installed under keyboard:
370-AEZK : 32GB, 2x16GB, DDR4 3200MHz Non -ECC Memory
(CCT36 - DIMM,16G,3200,2RX8,DDR4,XMP,NE)

Some time later, was ordered another 2 Memory Modules (16gb+16gb):

https://www.dell.com/en-ie/work/shop/dell-memory-upgrade-16gb-2rx8-ddr4-sodimm-3200mhz/apd/aa937596/memory

and when i installed them I get the same "2 amber + 5 white" flash (memory error).
tried to swap them + to put only one module - but got the same error "2 amber + 5 white"

Once I remove them everything works as it should.

BIOS updated to the latest version (like all other updates)

Thank you

Update=I agree to try this out. However, as I travel often, this will not be possible now but in 1-2 months time, when I am in Ireland. And if this does not sort out the issue then I will opt for returning them and ask for a refund.

Thank you in advance!

I am having the same issue with a Dell precision 7540. 2x16 GB chips under the keyboard, installed to 2x 32 GB under the chassis and it worked for 96 gig. I bought two more 32 gig to make it 128 as the system supports it and the machine froze. I went through memory diagnostics and came up with many errors most of them were on dimm D on this 7540.

I could not get it to boot with 128 however going back to the original configuration of 96 worked fine.

I am going to order ram from a different vendor and see if this solves the problem.
