0x0000000d error for AIO 962 printer

My AIO 962 printer is directly connected to my Dell Dimension 8300 desktop running XP.  I can print fine from the XP machine.  I'm trying to install the printer on my Vista 64-bit machine.  (Dell XPS).  I get the 0x0000000d error when trying to add the printer in.

Has anyone got this to work?  I used the patch utility to clean everything out and re-install the drivers.  Perhaps I'm not doing things in the proper sequence.  Can someone please provide the complete sequence of steps needed to add in a printer connected to an XP machine from a Vista machine?

Re: 0x0000000d error for AIO 962 printer

After I think I got everything installed correctly, I get the dreaded communications failure alarm.

The Vista and XP machines are both directly connected to my router.  I have no issues with the 2 machines communicating otherwise.

Re: 0x0000000d error for AIO 962 printer

JohnJLewis,

The XP computer is printing fine with no errors, correct? You need to setup the printer for printer sharing. Sharing a printer through a wireless network

On the Vista computer, you'll need to run the patch(printer cleanup utility, until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Install the Vista 64-bit drivers. and choose network. Then make the correct selection and follow the instructions.

Firewalls and virus programs can block communications.

Re: 0x0000000d error for AIO 962 printer

I can print just fine from the XP desktop the printer is attached to.  I can also print fine from an XP laptop that I was successful in installing the 962 as a network printer.  I just can print ("Communication Not Available") from my Vista-64 desktop or Vista-32 laptop.

Also, from the Vista-64 machine, I have no problems accessing all of the shared folders on the XP desktop.  The printer installation goes off without a hitch.  It sees the 962 on the XP desktop and appears to install just fine.  When I'm prompted to print the test page, that's when it fails.

All of this is after I've done what you suggested.  Running the patch utility also killed/removed my 948 printer (connected directly to the Vista-64 desktop) and Dell Dock, along with other miscellaneous Dell items (ink ordering, etc.).  I also disabled the firewall (Norton) on both the Vista and XP machines.

How do I debug this?  Just 30 seconds before and after receiving "Communication Not Available" from my Vista-64 desktop, I can print just fine from the XP laptop located in a different part of the house.  There's nothing wrong with the USB cord, printer connection, power, etc.  This has to be something with Vista or the drivers I downloaded from the Dell support site.  Would the 32-bit drivers work?  The drivers from Microsoft?  A generic driver?  I don't really care about the fancy features.  I just need to do basic printing from Vista machines.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

JohnJLewis,

The driver package, if you choose network, should help walk you through the process.

Try looking at...

Allow a printer past Norton (This is for an older version of Norton but should get you close to where you need to change the settings to allow the printer to communicate.
