64-bit driver for p513w on linux (ubuntu)

Hi all,

I recently upgraded my ubuntu to a 64-bit version, but now I cannot install the printer driver because it is 32-bit only.

Does anyone knows:

1) whether a 64-bit driver is in development

2) a work-around? I have been pulling the ppd file from a 32-bit machine, but when using it on my new machine, it complains about a 'filter program' which is obviously not installed.

Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers,

Joachim

The problem with the Dell-supplied Linux driver is due to two bugs in the packaging, both of which require some command line steps to resolve. The first is in the initial install script and has been known about for some time. When you run the script, it creates a temporary directory for the installation files then throws an error. This is caused by a typo in the file /tmp/config/run.lua - one instance of "ownership" has an extra "h" which needs to be removed.

When you try to run the enclosed  dell-inkjet-09-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb, another error pops up referring to a spurious blank line in the description section of the deb's control file. This one requires unpackaging the deb to a new directory, deleting the original deb,  editing out the blank line in the control file, and recreating the deb. The revised deb will install the printer driver. I've used it to install on (K)ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04 and on Mint 16 and 17, though you have to open cups (localhost:631 in a browser) to set up the printer rather than system settings (the latter seems to offer the wrong backend - in cups setup select backend #1)

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Rick,

Yes, I have tried them,  and they work fine on 32-bit systems. But I can't get them to work on 64-bit systems.

Best regards,
Joachim

Joachim,

Most Dell Inkjet Printers are made for Dell by Lexmark but I think the P models are made by Kodak.  If you find a similar printer on their website the 64-bit drivers may or may not work. I know on Windows systems, not sure about Linux, sometimes you can install things in the programs files folder instead of the programs folder (x86) and they program runs without problems.

Maybe someone can help you in the Dell Linux Forum.

Rick

Hugely thanks for your answer! Would you mind sharing the patched .deb here on the forum?

I tried to upload the patched deb file, but your system doesn't accept ".deb" as a valid file type. I'll have to find a way to put it into a zip or gz file before I can upload it.

I was able to use it to install the driver on my Kubuntu 14.04 and Mint 17 desktops and a Mint 16 laptop. As mentioned before, I had to use Cups to set up the printer, so I could select the correct backend #1 - system settings printer install routine doesn't do that properly. I can at least print now.

The toolbox icon shows up on my desktop, but it doesn't launch the GUI properly. I am also not yet able to access the scanner. I suspect some relevant files are not being unpacked to the /tmp directory when the dell-inkjet-09-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh script is run.

For clarity, I am not affiliated with Dell or this website. But I just want to make sure that people can install this printer driver, when they access this page. Perhaps host it somewhere else, and post a link to it here?
