Dell 942 All-in-one scan problem

Hi, I have a Dell 942 All-in-one printer that copys fine, prints from PC fine but will not scan to the PC. I run a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with XP OS. When I attempt to send to pc it fails and when I try the all in one software it shows a failed communication error. To check connection you try printing a page which works just fine. I have reinstalled software by download and that didn't help. Any suggestions?
