Error message when plugging in printer - new message, old printer

Jump to solution

Hey, Dell forums. Got a bit of a problem, and, well, I have no clue how to fix it. I'm hoping someone can help me.

Technical specs first off: the computer in question is an IBM Thinkpad R51 Laptop running Windows XP Professional SP 3. The printer is a Dell All-in-One 926. They have both been in use together for a long time, and never had an issue until now.

About a month ago, we bought an ereader. When I plugged it in, I received an error message. I thought nothing of it, until I plugged it in again and got the same message. I was just going to deal with it - until I tried to use my printer and got the exact same error message. At that point, I restored my computer to before I installed the ereader. I plugged the printer back in once it was done, and didn't see a problem, so I thought it was fixed.

Today, I plugged my printer in again. I've been having some issues with it - it was constantly printing draft quality and then kept insisting there was tape on the cartridge, but I haven't tried printing anything with it since plugging it in to check for the error message - and wanted to see if it would print. As soon as it was plugged in, there was the error message. It came up twice, in quick succession - I hit cancel and another popped up immediately, and I hit cancel again, as the first time through with this message and the ereader had shown me it was the only way to make it stop.

This is the error message I got: Application popup: Windows - No Disk : Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c

It scanned, printed, and scanned another image into the computer fine after that. I can't restore to before installing the ereader again - that point has been erased by the computer creating automatic points. Either way, it apparently didn't fix the problem. It was the same usb port as I always use to plug the printer in, and I did it the same as I always have. The only things I have done since the restore was to update Windows and things like Java and Flash.

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this error message so I don't get it every time I use my printer?

Phenyx,

Can you copy a document under the glass? No computer is needed to do this correct?

I would try reinstalling the printer using the instructions below.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista
Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

I can copy thing by just putting them on the glass - no computer required for a copy job. Last time I tried, I chose 'black' as the color as it was a black and white document, and it gave me a blank page. Chose 'color' and it printed - draft quality, but it printed. Right now it's still giving me fits about insisting on printing an alignment page each time I turn it on - both the cartridges are the ones I had in it before all this started, I just wiped them off with a tissue when it was doing only draft quality. I've checked them multiple times since then to be sure they're clean. Should the alignment pages have more than just black and blue on them? I can't remember.

I'm working on downloading the patch and driver at the moment. As I have a rather full schedule for today, I won't be able to attempt anything until later this evening. Is it possible to just reinstall the driver rather than the whole printer? Or is that what the patch does?

Phenyx,

If there is a problem with copying, then I would guess that there is a problem with one and/or both of the Dell Series 9 ink cartridges.

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 9 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 9 color cartridge.

You are using Dell Series 9 ink cartridges, correct?

Dell Series 9 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 9 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

Black cartridge = black side(left side)          Color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side)          Color cartridge = color side(right side)

It is possible to get a Dell Series 9 cartridge with a bad sensor. Contact the place of purchase for a replacement.

The uninstall/reinstall seems to have worked at getting rid of the error message. I plugged the printer in and out twice to be sure, and nothing popped up. That's a relief, error messages are never a good thing to see pop up, especially mysterious surprise ones.

The alignment - not so much. It still claims there is tape on the (half empty) cartridges. I'm guessing it is the black ink cartridge causing the problem. I had to print something out (deadline) and it was in black and white. When I printed it straight, all I got was the image at the bottom of the page - which was jpeg-ridden and fainter than it should have been. When I told it to complete-a-print and print all black with the color cartridge, it printed all of it, and darker and smoother than the black did. Not sure why it printed the image and none of the words, and it's not a very scientific guess, but  I'm going to say it's the black one having problems. I have a replacement black cartridge that I will try within a day or two.

A concern - the icon for the Dell All-In-One center was still in my menu after the uninstall and restart, but it was installed with the rest and did it's "preparing for first use" scan. Is that something to be worried about? It opens fine, I just have not had a chance to test it yet.

Phenyx,

Sounds like you have a bad Dell Series 9 ink cartridge. The Dell Series 9 cartridges have the printhead in the cartridge, so if they have a problem, you usually replace them and everything works.

The Dell All-In-One Center, may not have all the program you used to use. Try reading...

Looks like that was what was happening - I haven't tried printing with it yet, but I got a chance to change the old black for a new one, and (finally) got the "Alignment Finished" message. Hopefully that should take care of all it's problems, thanks for your help.
