Unlock Scanner
I m troubleshooting an A940 printer for a Friend. I have have fixed the printer before, or should I say the printing problem before. Now the printer just says "Unlock scanner then press power". Ever time you plug the printer in. The scanners unlock lever is in the unlock position.
Can anyone tell me if the printer is just toast now or fixable.

I have exact same problem. What i have discovered is that the scanner bar doesn't scan as it should. I have been able to get the printer working by tapping the side of the scanner - this frees up the scannere sufficient for the screenlock error to go away - however it still will not scan.
I figure what has to be done is to take the scanner apart far enough to free it up. That I haven't figured out how to do yet.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've figured it out! I discovered how to take the top panel off the scanner and I then found out what the problem was. The drive belt had slipped down out of position from the carriage and wasn't driving it as it should. After I pushed it back up where it belongs everything works normally. I hope this is the same problem as yours.

This is going to be difficult to describe but I will try. First open the scanner cover. You should notice two small black screw at the top of the glass. Take these out. (I am not sure this is required or not). I also removed two small back screws that are visible while looking at the back of the unit - near the top one on each side. Here again I am not sure it is necessary to remove them. Now while looking down on the top of the scanner glass you have to pry up the plastic on both sides and the front. This is the hard part as you have to see where the plastic separates. The plastic is just snapped into place. Once this is done you can get at the carriage. The drive wraps around and is attached to the carriage to drive it. This becomes obvious after you get the plastic cover open. It my case the drive cable had become loose from the carriage and could quite easily be put back into place. Now put everything back together and see if that fixes the problem. The first time I ran it it made a strange noise as it was necessary for the drive unit to reset itself. Once this had happened everthing worked normally.
Good luck, Emery
