Is anyone finding ProSphere better than ECC?

It seems ProSphere is much, much, much more limited than ECC, specifically in terms of host and the ability to report on hosts. I prefer the ProSphere interface, but that's where it ends. I want ECC level reporting and alerting available in ProSphere. We use ECC to monitor file system capacity/usage, and that isn't available in ProSphere. Isn't monitoring the actual USED capacity or your storage, as based by host/user usage a significant portion of storage management?

Hi,

Review the Storage Resource Management Suite 3.0 release as all the report information available in ControlCenter can be found in this software.

Re: Is anyone finding ProSphere better than ECC?

Understood. For our purposes, ProSphere was being heavily promoted as our ECC replacement, but we lost a significant amount of reporting capability. The lack of any host monitoring/reporting for capacity is a huge oversight, although an obvious money grab for other EMC software solutions.

Re: Is anyone finding ProSphere better than ECC?

To realize more parity with ECC functionality with Propshere, you should be using the SRM Suite which consists of Prosphere, Watch4net and SCA (Storage Configuration Advisor).  This will give you much more capability and reporting. This is the direction going forward. If you are an existing Propshere customer, you can buy the SRM Suite at a drastically reduced price. Not sure how long that deal lasts so I would take advantage sooner rather than later.

Re: Is anyone finding ProSphere better than ECC?

Overall, ECC is being replaced by SRM as mentioned above.  SRM 3.0 (which GA'd in December) integrates the functionality of Watch4Net, ProSphere, and SRM into a single product, single install.  SRM is now fully capable of replacing ECC's reporting and troubleshooting functionality.  ProSphere, ECC, and SCA will eventually be retired with SRM being the single replacement for all of them.

EMC ViPR is the strategy for centralized/automated configuration and provisioning so if you need the provisioning functionality that was part of ECC, then you should look at ViPR.
