Dell Datasafe Local Backup crashes when checking for update

Everytime the program tries to automatically check for an update it creates a message error popping up saying it has errored out and refuses to continue.  Trying to do the check manually after opening the main program also results in termination of the update process.  Going to the Dell site provides no relief.
