Microsoft Outlook Password Feature - How can it be bypassed if you lose the password?

When I try to open the *.pst file that Outlook Express used on my previous computer, it asks for a password. I never assigned a password to this file, so I have no clue what it wants. It won't accept a blank. Is there any way to bypass the password feature? It did access this file in Outlook Express without a password -- as recently as 09-19-03. I would appreciate any help with this. All of my Contact information is locked in this file.

Thanks for your interest. I have done what you say and it asks for a password before it will import the file.

You cannot open the pst file directly. Open Outlook, choose Import from the file menu, pick personal folders, point it to the old pst file. Then Outlook will have the Folder list display the new Personal Folder below the current one. Make sure you are can view the Folder list on the left.

Sorry, everything I've found requires you to know the password. You need the old password to change the password or modify the pst file. Repost the question and maybe someone else will have a solution. Did you have a password list? Search Help in Outlook for other possibilities.

You said in first post "Outlook Express", but I assume you meant "Outlook".
There is an older tool called pst19upg, otherwise known as Outlook PST Password Stripper.
This program was not originally designed to remove the password from a .pst file,
but it was discovered that this was a unintended side-effect.
You can find it HERE and it's free.
I have not used this program, but I have seen it mentioned as a possible solution
for your type of problem a number of times.
If you decide to try it, it is very important that you look it over very carefully
as it could be risky. The download includes a readme.txt file - be sure to read it.
Also, I have read that it works best if, when you run it, you copy the .pst file and the tool to a
folder in your root folder (such as C:\Test) as it usually doesn't run correctly from paths
containing folders with more than 8 characters in their names. I've also read that it only works
if the .pst file did not have large table support enabled.
You didn't say what version of Outlook you are running or what your OS is. I do not know
what versions of Outlook and what operating systems this tool will or will not work on.
Somebody else may come along with more information about this, but the best place I know of, offhand, to
ask questions about it are the MS Newsgroups for Outlook. The web interface for these can be found HERE.

Another possibility is to purchase a tool from a place such as LostPassword. I'm sure there are
other places for this kind of thing and you might do a Google search for these. Be prepared to
spend some cash for this stuff.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Thanks for your several suggestions. I will try them out and let you know what happens.

To answer your question about Outlook Express. In my previous computer I ran all my email through Outlook Express and it accessed this file without a password. I took the HD from that computer and installed it on my new Dell Dimension 2400, now running Windows XP (previously I ran under Windows 95). All the info is still on that hard disk, but nothing accesses the same, since XP has enlisted its own version of Outlook Express. So I haven't found a way to get back to the access I had under 95/Outlook Express. I am afraid to monkey with the settings for fear of throwing everthing out of whack. If I can bypass the password, I can import the old .pst file and be done.

Again, thanks.

Outlook Express does not use pst files. Only Outlook--a completely different program-- uses Personal File Folders (pst). This, however, does not solve your password problem, if you actually have a password for Outlook--not OE. If you do solve it, use the import feature to import from OE. If you did not use Outlook on the previous computer, your pst folder would be empty of personal files. Sorry I didn't catch the OE in your first post.

Note--do not try to use a password from OE with Outlook.

To JBravo:

Thanks for your tip. I obtained the free program, didn't work. Then went to Microsoft Newsgroups and found out about a program from a company in Russia, for 30.00, but was leary of it. Didn't sound like they guaranteed it would work. So I went to Lost Password, got Office Key for 45.00 from Passware, and it worked instantly. I think it was worth the money to recover a whole bunch of data that would have been lost.

Thanks a bunch.
