Strange lines appearing under paragraphs in Microsoft Word

I find that lines are appearing underneath paragraphs in a lengthy Word Document. I remember this happed before and someone gave me instructions how to remove them. (delete etc doesn't work). As far as I remember I had to click page setup or paragraph or something else from the top menus and then make some adjustment. Can anyone please help me with this.
