Is taking ISM exam neccessary if I have done ETF in year 2006?

Jump to solution

Hi,

I am planning to do Isilon or VPLEX Certification.

In year 2006, I had done the ETF Certification. About two years ago, I was informed that if ETF certification is done, then one need not do the ISM Certification.

Does it still hold true?

Kindly let me know.

Yes and no.  You don't necessarily have to sit for the ISM first.  You can sit for the VPLEX/VMAX exams first and then  ISM after if you prefer. But most people need the ISM concepts to prepare adequately for the specialist exams.  Point is you won't earn the specialist certification until you pass both ISM and specialist exams.

Associate - ETF certifications were offered in the 2004 through 2006 timeframe.  The need at the time was to set a bar to measure your EMC product knowledge.   Storage technologies have changed significantly in the ensuing 10 years.  The
Isilon scale-out NAS solution was added to the EMC product portfolio in 2011.  Education Services evaluated the storage technology fundamentals needed by implementation and support staff specializing on the Isilon platform.  The Associate ETF curricula exposed knowledge gaps in the areas of Cloud, Big Data, Flash and scale-out NAS technologies.  The conclusion was these certifications represented a knowledge base that was insufficient for individuals to excel with this new generation of storage solutions.  The Isilon curricula for implementation engineers and platform engineers was
designed  with the assumption that the learner has acquired the knowledge represented by the Information Storage and Management certification.  This rationale applies to the VPLEX certification as well

Hi Denis,

Thank you for taking time and writing an elaborate answer.

So this would mean that, I would need to clear ISM Certification first in order to get certified on Isilon/VPLEX/VMAX etc.

Is my understanding correct?

Hi Denis,

Thank you so much for such a clear answer.

One final question. Is the Cloud Infrastructure Service exam equivalent to ISM?

In other words, rather than doing ISM and then a Specialist exam, can I do CIS and then the specialist exam and get certified that way?

Is it possible?

The Cloud Architect track is the only one that requires CIS Associate as the specialist level pre-req.  It does not substitute for the ISM associate requirement for Isilon/VPLEX/VMax.
