Unable to upgrade idrac8 from 2.70.70.70

I have an R630 running the 2.70.70.70 iDRAC firmware. I've tried every version of update newer than what is installed and I consistently get the error, "Unable to extract payloads from Update Package". I have googled this to death and I can't seem to find a fix for this. I am attempting the update via the iDRAC web GUI. Would love any suggestions!

ChadMarkley,

Have you tried the process of downloading the update and then running it to extract the files, once extracted locate the firmimg.d8 file and then use that file in the Update tab of the iDrac?

Let us know.

iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller version 2.83.83.83 Release Notes (https://dell.to/3G65DGK)

Updating iDRAC firmware to the current version from versions earlier than 2.70.70.70 is not supported (For example, updating iDRAC firmware from version 2.60.60.60 to version 2.82.82.82 or later is not supported). First update to version 2.70.70.70 or higher, and then update to 2.82.82.82 or later.

Let's download

Update Package for MS Windows 64-Bit.

From here

and update through iDRAC, shall we?

Can you reset iDRAC and try to update the FW. If still not working can you perform AC Power Cycle(Shutdown the server, Remove the power and connect back after few minutes) and try. Which Image are you uploading to iDRAC. You need to upload firmimg image file or windows DUP exe file to update iDRAC FW.

Sorry, I don't think I explained properly. The iDRAC is already on 2.70.70.70. I am ultimately trying to update to version 2.83.83.83. I am using the GUI method and not the Windows .exe because this server is running Vmware ESX 6.7.

I did try to upgrade to the next version after 70, which is .75. However even that didn't work.

I did restart the card and I did power cycle the server. We actually moved this server from one office to another last week, so it got a good restart. I was having the issue at the other location as well.

Hi, 1 please answer to Shine's guidelines given before 2 do you see a error message? Could you show us a screenshot?

I have tried resetting the iDRAC AND powering off the server then pulling the power plug, no change. I am also using the .exe file (not the windows one) and attempting to upload the file using the iDRAC web GUI. Attached is a screenshot of the error I get. I get this same error regardless of the firmware release between what I am on now and .83. I've tried to stairstep using every version available to me.

How and why does it work by fetching and locating the firmimg.d8 file, and then using that file in the Update tab of the iDrac?

Thank you !
