RP/SE Conversion to RP/EX for incoming source VMAXe Array
Hello,
Have a site currently using RP/SE and CRR (Version 3.4.SP1.P1) between source CX4960 and target VNX7500. The source CX4960 is being replaced by incoming VMAXe.
After the data migration of LUNs from the CX4-960 to the new Source VMAXe, most LUN sizes will be larger on the source for business reasons.
Due to this, there is not a requirement to keep current RecoverPoint Consistency groups running and synced. We will be starting over and re-configuring the target VNX 7500 for proper replica sizes/journals to match the VMAXe source LUNs..
So far my steps are to:
- Upgrade to latest RP Software via Deployment Wizard
- Convert RP/SE to RP/EX via Deployment Wizard ( I have already obtained the new RP/EX base licensing for the VMAXe)
What I am not sure of is how to gracefully disable the current setup of RP environment in order to prepare for the new install of RP/EX between the new source VMAXe and same target VNX7500. Since I won't have the requirement to utilize a "many to one" with RP/EX, looking for the best way to accomplish this and effectively remove the original RP configuration to start over with the new environement..
Any suggestions? Much appreciated,

You will basically start with a brand new RP setup. Don't bother upgrading RP via DM. I would recommend that you completely destroy the RP environment (disable CGs, delete CGs, remove splitters) and then re-install RP by inserting the latest RP DVD into the DVD drive. Before inserting the DVD reboot each RPA and press Ctrl+R while the BIOS loads (you will see a prompt for Ctrl+R). This will get you into the PERC RAID controller. Perform a fast initialization on the virtual disk which will wipe the existing RP OS on the local drives. At that point insert the latest RP OS into the DVD drive and reboot each RPA. Once the OS is installed log is as boxmgmt and assign a temporary management IP address to each RPA. Once the IPs are assigned use DM to deploy RP.
You will have a new installation ID once you are done with DM and thus you will need to re-activate the RP/EX license by using that installation ID.

I'll let others charm in but I don't think there is. The reason is because the repository volume will not be on the CX4-960 anymore, it will be on the VMAXe. Migrating the repository volume from CX4 to VMAXe is not supported, at least that's what my understanding is.

Very good Ernes,
This is definitely the cleanest approach and I would prefer to handle it this way.
However, I may have restrictions as far as physically being at the remote site to perform the tasks as mentioned..
Is there a secondary approach to accomplishing close to the same, yet not require the physical access to the RPA’s (DVDs and halting the boot process)?
If so I may have to take that approach.. Let me know if have alternative suggestions,
Thanks,

Hey David,
Are the appliances setup with iDRAC? You can configure via SSH within boxmgmt if not. This will give you out of bound management for BIOS access and remote mounting media such as ISO's. It can be configured on either the WAN or LAN port depending on your needs.

This is helpful as well,
So if I get iDRAC enabled on each RPA via boxmgmt , this will allow me to reboot an RPA, press CRTL/R on boot up to perform the fast initialziation, remotely mount the latest RP ISO version ,reboot the same RPA to load the new RP OS..
From this point, would I still be able use iDRAC to set the temporary IP Address on the RPA? Meaning without a physical crossover cable, since the RPA is now back at the factory 10.77.77.77? If so great news...
Also, I'm trying to remember back about iDRAC, and in other uses was always a separate licensed product. Is that the case with RecoverPoint - meaning the site must have separate licensing/console for iDRAC in order to use it? Or does the integrated version here within boxmgmt give us all the access needed.....
Many thanks,

David,
Is the biggest hinderance that you dont have physical access to the appliances? Do the IP's for the cluster and RPAs need to change? Is it just the source array and what your replicating all that is changing? iDRAC via RP is not going to work if your wiping the local drives, I dont believe. Depending on your answer I would do everything through deployment manager. Prior to that, I would...
Not having physical access to the appliances is preventing you from doing a clean install like Ernes suggested. Is out of band management available out side of what RP provides in this environment? Thats another option.

Correct the remote site RPA's are just that - pretty remote-unmanned.. It would require a flight- but I can make that happen if needed. Does not appear remote managment is viable option for this site. As for the current RPA setup - all IPs can remain.. and only the source Array and all CG's will change. ..
So it boils down to a decision I have to make on the two options:
1) Attempt the procedure detailed directly above. Keep exisitng IP's duriing re-run of deployment manager full RP install .Select the new VMAXe repository and format accordingly..
2) Or start extremely clean by physically getting to both sites and start from scratch with brand new RP install...
Any success overall with the first option? As far as positive RP behavior afterwards during the DM operations and post configurations?
Thanks,

There shouldnt be, I have done reconfigs with no issue using the deployment manager. At this point you have nothing to lose by attempting the reconfigure remotely. Worst case you have to go onsite to extreme clean. I have never had to fast initlize the drives to reconfigure.

Went flawless!
Was able to convert the environment to RP/EX and use the new VMAXe repository device, VMAXe splitter and replicate down to the VNX splitter..
Everything came up up clean and able to create all new CG's...
Much appreciated,
