Ask the Expert: EMC Secure Remote Services (ESRS) – New Release, New Name, New Virtual Edition

Welcome to this EMC Ask the Expert session. On this occasion we'll answer questions on the latest ESRS release, new name and virtual edition.

ESRS has enabled secure remote monitoring and repair for customer EMC products since 2006. With the September launch of ESRS v3.02, the name has changed slightly (the last “S” now stands for “Services”) and the solution has been REDEFINED for the 3rd platform of IT. This virtual edition of ESRS is EMC’s new gold standard solution for remote connected services. ESRS v3.02 is a virtualized appliance that is more flexible than pervious ESRS configurations and built to scale with EMC’s portfolio of solutions and the growth of our customers. This Ask The Expert event is your opportunity to find out more about ESRS v3.02 by discussing:

  • Technical and security questions
  • Site planning activities
  • Key differences between the virtual edition of ESRS and previous releases
  • Integration with EMC Online Support
  • Future roadmap for features and enhancements

To find out more about ESRS v3, read the recent Support Community blog and take a look at this new ESRS demo.

That is nice.

  • Is this a virtual appliance as well or do i have to provide my own VM (what Linux operating systems are supported)
  • What is the migration path for PM, especially for folks that have a lot of custom access policies in place ?

Right, on the ESRSVE you would enter the device serial number of the 2.X Gateway and it would "migrate" all the devices deployed on that Gateway to the ESRSVE.

We have a version of Policy Manager that runs on Linux (32 or 64-bit) so a Windows server is not required.

The Linux versions supported are:

It is not an appliance so you would need your own physical or virtual to install it.  There is a migration procedure in the Policy Manager Operations Guide but it has been my experience that it is easier and faster to just document the existing configuration, remove the old version of Policy Manager, install the new Policy Manager and recreate the configuration and test.

Great, thanks.

I tried it and it worked. That is a much quicker method than using the Migration Tool on the Gateway itself, which is the method described in Appendix A of the Operations Guide..

For a new implementation, do we have to make a choice between old ESRS and the new VE before the order?

No, the same ESRS license received with the order will work for ESRS 2.X or ESRS 3.X.

I think there is still a bit of an outstanding question from dynamox , and it is something I have been asking for for a a very long time now. Much has been done to improve the reliability and HA capabilities of the gateways themselves, but for customers who require the Policy Server to manage connections there is effectively zero fail-over capability.

I'm fully aware that there is a documented procedure for manually dumping the database and config and importing it into another Policy Manager and you can re-point the gateways to the new PM server, but that is not fail-over. It's also not practical to copy the config every time there is a change on the primary.

Are there follow up plans to turn the PM into a virtual appliance and maybe add some redundancy into that side of things as well?

Hello,

can ESRS be a means for branches without on-site IT?

Best regards,

Stefan

Hi !

I need to change the ip address of a recently new installed (virtual appliance) remote gateway. There is any document to follow to achieve this task ? Or is simply I must change the OS ip address... ?

Regards
