3TB Hard drive only showing 746GB Dimension 9200

I have a Dell Dimension 9200, running Windows 7 64 bit. I have just installed a Toshiba 3TB drive, but Windows only sees 746GB. I cannot seem to find any Intel drivers for the chipset to update.

Can anyone help?

Thank you.

Hi RattyCathy,

If your chipset does not support the Intel RST, then the solution is to use an SATA controller card. But I would visit the Intel site and check that first.

Thank you so much for your help. The Intel SATA RAID controller 8280 1 HR/HH/HO was listed as compatible, so I downloaded and installed the latest RST for 64bit Win 7. However, when I reboot it is still listing the old Intel Matrix Storage Manager, which had been originally installed under 32 bit Vista. Once in Windows, the RST opens and lists the drive as being 3TB, but Windows Disk Manager won't load any drive information at all. So I think a controller card is the way to go (and probably a Windows reinstall!).

Thanks again for your help.

I haven't tried a large drive with the combination of an old Dell and Windows 7, but with Windows 8, I didn't have to do anything special to have a 4tb drive fully recognized.

I could try this on my Dimension 3100, which was made about the same time as the 9200.

Thanks, I have put in a £5 Silicon Image SATA PCI-E card from Maplin and now Windows 7 can see the full 3TB. Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your reply. I did boot up to a Windows 8 install disk, loaded the RST drivers and the Win 8 installer still couldn't see the full capacity of the 3TB drive. So I think the chipset in the Dell 9200 just isn't compatible with it. I have installed a PCI-E SATA controller card and now Windows 7 can see the full 3TB.

Thank you for your kind offer to test it on your 3100 though.

That sounds odd, but I'm glad things worked out for you.
