Blu-ray Combo Burner for Studio XPS 8300

I have a Studio XPS 8300 (replaces the 8100) on order. I would appreciate recommendations for a good internal Blu-ray combo burner to install in it. The LG WH10LS30 for $79.99 at Newegg looks like good value to me but if there is one of much  better quality & reliability, I'll spend up to $150.00 for it.

Additionally, I'm confused about the physical form of burners that can be installed in this PC. I saw a post where a new owner couldn't installed his Blu-ray burner since the plastic trim around the tray access door was too big to fit. Also, in the XPS 8100 manual, there is mention of burners measuring "5.25 inches x i/2 H". Maybe I'm wrong but I assume the "1/2 H" means half height. Could some one please clarify this for me?

Best regards, Richard

Did you end up installing this burner? Did it fit? If not which burner did you use? Thanks,  I am wondering about the size myself but I don't see a mention of it in the online service manual or setup guide for the Dell XPS 8300.

Re: Blu-ray Combo Burner for Studio XPS 8300

Hi Richard,

This is a blu ray, DVD, and CD burner. It looks fine to me expect that there is no software for either burning blu ray discs or watching movies. These programs do not come cheap, so if you need software, consider a retail package rather than an OEM deal.

All of these drives are called "half height". In theory, any of them should fit, but as you have seen, the bezels will sometimes create problems. It's impossible to know without trying it.

Thanks Osprey, that's why I was hoping someone who had tried it could share their experience, it's a popular drive so I figured someone must have tried it by now. I ordered the Dell with full version of Roxio Creator so that should serve my purpose I think. I'm just interested in backing up data to blu-ray just to have another backup of my PC/external drives.

Re: Blu-ray Combo Burner for Studio XPS 8300

I was just looking to upgrade my dvd drive in my Studio xps 8300 (white case) but cannot see how the drive is physically removed.

The only way I can see how to do this is to slide the drive forward, therefore some of the plastic casing on the front needs to be removed - how please?

The instructions on the Dell site appear to show a different case.

Hi Sambat2000,

The procedure in your service manual says to remove the front bezel (with a link on how to do so)

Are you looking at the right page?

Re: Blu-ray Combo Burner for Studio XPS 8300

You remove the side cover first.

The next step is to remove the front bezel, and it's the trickiest. One by one, you lift each of the four plastic tabs and push it slightly forward. When they're all freed from their catches, the bezel is then rotated, pivoting on the other side, after which it can be removed.

The last step is to remove the screws holding the drive (along with the cables) and sliding it forward out of the chassis.
