Brand new Inspiron 560MT - 16x DVD +/- optical drive not recognised.
Just been unpacking my brand new Inspiron 560MT and found that the optical drive is not working. I put a CD in the slot, which opens when the button is pressed, and then looked on "my computer". Nothing showing. Ran diagnostics and got the following message:
"Please make sure the drive is connected"
"Windows didn't detect an optical drive. It might be disconnected or unplugged. Check the drive connection, or plug the device in".
I am seriously unimpressed. Dell failed to let me know when the desktop would be shipped. The courier company attempted delivery twice and I ended up doing a 60 mile round trip to collect. It doesn't work. Am thinking of returning it for a refund.
Before I do, is there anything I can do to get the thing working. Or is it a call to Dell on Monday morning.

It is possible that the system may have experienced some vibration
or rough handling while in transit. Open the system and make sure
the two cables at the back of the drive are secure. Follow the SATA
cable to the motherboard and check that it is secure there also.
Close the system and power it on and see if that helps.

Thanks Skybird for the quick reply. If I open the cover, will it affect my warranty?

I took the plunge and opened the covers. Sure enough the optical drive wasn't connected properly. I've reconnected it and it works!
