CD/DVD not recognized - Inspiron 2200

My Inspiron 2200 has a DVD/CD rom drive that just stopped working.  It is not recognized when I go to Device Manager there is a yellow circle with an exclamation point.  Drive is HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4244.  I tried updating drivers (no luck), I tried uninstalling and reinstalling (no luck), I tried updating my IDE controller (no luck).  I thought the drive was bad so I got an external USB DVD and plugged it in.  It also don't work.  XP said new hardware and identified it but in device manager it had a yellow circle.  HELP
