DVD/CD writer does not play dvd's

Recently, my Dell Vostro 400 stopped playing dvd's. The powerlink dvd program will come up but no buttons to play the dvd are lit up.They will not play in windows media player either. I did a diagnostic for the drive and it came up ok. I purchased a new dvd/cd writer thinking the eye may be bad but it does the exact same thing. I then tried to upgrade the powerlink program from DX7 for Dell to version 9 but it will not install because it says a retail version of powerlink 7 needs to be installed. I orginally contacted Cyberlink about the issue but they redirected me to Dell since it is a specific package for Dell. What do I do to fix the problem? I show no conflicts and the they say they are functioning properly. I have a NVIDIA G-8800 GT video card installed.

Dell's Cyberlink programs are non-retail so you can't upgrade them.

Try re-installing the Cyberlink program. If that doesn't work, try the free VLC player.
