DVD Rom and CDRW missing
My DVD/CD drive is missing. The drive doors work but nothing will play. My operating system is Windows XP - Dell Dimension 4700. Can anyone assist me with how to get this back?

Do you have one or two optical drives? Have you rebooted the system? Did this just happen out of the blue? Anything else happen around this same time?
When you open up My Computer do you see the optical drive(s) listed under devices with removable storage? Are they listed in device manager? Anything else not working?
Did you change or add any hardware or software prior to this? Have you checked the ribbon cables inside the case to make sure they are seated properly?
Do you receive any error messages? Depending on your answer you can try and run the FixIt tool here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

Many, many thanks to you! I ran the Fixit tool at the link you provided and I am so happy to say, I have my drives back. I am so glad I took the time and found you! Have a wonderful weekend!!
