DVD drive burns CDs but not DVDs HELP?

Hi,

I am in desperate need of help... I have a Dell inspiron 531 and been having problems burning avi files onto a dvd+r using nero.  I have also been getting the blue screen alot.  Could I have a virus or do I need a new dvd/cd drive?

Hi, mkvaldez:

Ok, there are several things involved in making a DVD from an AVI file. First, Nero needs to encode your AVI file to DVD (VOB, BUP and IFO) files. Second, Nero needs to be told what type of disc to burn (movie DVD) so it creates the proper folders on the DVD disc. And third, it needs to burn the DVD project. Only the third step involves your DVD burner.

Here's what I want you to do to check your DVD burner. Put a blank disc in your drive and open Nero Infotool. It will take a few seconds to read the hardware and the disc, then open a multi-tab read-out. Click the disc tab and you should see the type of disc and the manufacturer ID. Post back here with that information.

Hi again:

type: blank DVD+R

Manufacturer: Sony D12

Im not too familiar burning with nero since I usually would use divx player to burn and it would work but now it says "no recorder found". Thats why I decited to try Nero. Does nero still need to encode avi files to DVD if I have a divx DVD player?  It worked when I burned an avi file on a CD and it played in my divx player.

It says failed to burn at 16x,

This is the log for the error I get when I burn to a dvd:

Ok, "unspecified recorder error" is not too helpful. Let me ask you to go into device manager and tell me if you see an IDE channel, and if the current transfer mode is listed as PIO or DMA. If you see PIO, that's a problem. Since your drive is SATA, this shouldn't happen but some of these systems are set up in the BIOS for ATA emulation mode.

I'm thinking this might possibly be a media problem. I am not able to find Sony D12 in the database. I see Sony D21, which appear to be quite good, but I also see Sony D11, which appear to be bad. If you grab DVD Identifier (link below), it should be able to determine the media code.

For some reason I can't find whether it has PIO or DMA? Am I doing something wrong?  By the way you were right it was D21 sorry!  I also downloaded the dvd identifier.  Do I check the media code on a blank disc or a burned one with errors?

One of those channels should have a device listed in that table.

Hi,

Sorry it took so long to get back I wasn't able to login.  Both are blank, they look the same. There isn't anything listed on either one.

Ok, just for kicks, delete the drive, both IDE channels and the IDE controller and reboot.

Take a look at my first post. Is Nero creating the DVD movie files correctly? If so, they should be in a folder somewhere. Using Nero Express, run a DVD movie project and point to those files and tell me if the DVD is burned correctly, or the error if it is not.

Do you mean uninstall or disable? I don't see delete.  Do I also delete "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

Ive disabled the ide controllers.  I burned using the data buring onto a cd and it played in my divix player, but not with the dvd+r. Does that mean my drive is still good?
