Thanks I went with the exteranl dvd drive i was wondering i can upgrade the ram and hard drive but can the 2.2 cpu be upgraded also or not?

I'm looking at the specs for that laptop and it appears to support only external optical drives.

In general, RAM and hard drives are upgradeable, but it depends on what you've got.
The CPU is not.

ok cool thanks sorry to bother you but can you tell me how much ram me dell laptop can go up to its at 4 gb now can i go to 8 or higher?

The 3531 has only one memory socket and supports 4G max.
