DVD drive doesn't read disks - XPS L501X.

Hey!

I've had this laptop for about a month now. As soon as I got it I did a clean install Windows upgrade to Win7 Prof which deleted all the drivers.

My DVD drive is iffy when reading discs. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's the same with games and movies.

When I look at the DVD RW Drive properties, the hardware tab says "TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L633C", location 1, device is working properly.

I've tried downloading the driver from the Dell Support site but it's not the right one ("DS-8A5SH 12.7 SATA Trayload DVDRW").

I also cannot email the Dell Technical Support because I keep getting this error: "Error determining system information. Please try again later."

Help!

Thanks,

James :)

P.S. If you require any further information, please ask :)

The Diagnostics indicates the drive has failed.  Contact Dell and
they will replace the drive under the warranty.

What you are referring to as a driver is Firmware.  Firmware is the
software inside the drives memory.  I see no Firmware on the Dell
site for your drive and operating system., thus you get the error.

The driver is supplied by Windows.  There is only one and all drives use it.

Does it have trouble reading DVDs or CDs; or both?  There are two lasers,
one for CDs and one for DVDs.Test the drive by running the Dell Diagnostics.
The Diagnostics should be on your hard drive.

Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the screen.  This will take
you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition or Diagnostics will be a
choice.  Run the Custom Test for the drive and have a data CD or data DVD
(not music CD or movie DVD) in the drive for the read test.

Okay, I downloaded the driver on the Dell Driver site. It's a ZIP file that contains two folders: Dos and Windows. Inside each is an .exe file.

The DOS one returns the following error:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

The Windows one returns the following error:

No matched drive detected ! This utility is only for PLDS DVD+-RW DS-8A5SH Ver 1.00 drive. Detected drives: 0-0-1-0 D:TSSTcorpDVD+-RW TS-L633C DW50

=====

I ran the DVD-RW Drive tests in the Dell Support Center (v3).

The following "Build-In' Self-Tests" pass:

  • DRAM Test
  • Flash ROM Test
  • Main IC Test
  • OPU Test
  • Spindle Test
  • Tray Out Test

The following "DVD Media Tests" using GTA IV pass:

  • DVD Linear Seek Test
  • DVD Random Seek Test
  • DVD Funnel Seek Test
  • DVD Linear Read Compare Test

The disc does not show up in My Computer while the tests are running.

I then tried running the "Data CD Tests" using an empty ASDA ReWritable disc, but I got the following error message:

Please insert a Data CD.

=====

I then ran the Diagnostic Tests in F12.

The CDROM - Optical Device Built-in Self Test...

  • Passes with no disc
  • Passes with the blank ASDA disc
  • Returns the following error message with the GTA IV disc:

Error Code 0152.

Msg: Error Code 2000-0152

Msg: Optical Drive 0 - incorrect status: 1A Error register: 0020h

Sense information: (02-0401).

The given error code and message can be used by Technical Support to help diagnose the problem.

The technician finally came today and replaced the drive.

I guess that makes it 38 days - so much for a next-day service!

Anyway, it works fine now.
