Diagnostic Error - PSA 1000-0142

Can anyone give me a better explanation of what this error means. Drive Self Test failed. Status byte = XXh.

Obviously there is an error on my HDD but will a re-installation of Windows XP fix it (skipping the bad part of the drive to write to somewhere else)?

If yes I would need a Dell Laptop Latitude D600 (2004) XP SP1 Windows re-install disk if anyone has one. I can't find mine.

Hi, ursalee,

This drive needs to be replaced. You can request a replacement Windows XP disc by completing this form. There is a nominal charge, like $10. Alternatively, you could borrow a Dell XP reinstallation disc from a friend.

Here is the reinstallation procedure.

Good luck!

I had a quick search for a drive for the D600 on the dell site, but couldn't find one, can I pick these up from BestBuy or?

Thank you

Hi, ursalee,

Yes, this drive at Best Buy should work. I believe they will install for a very nominal fee if you buy it there. Just be sure to remind them your system requires an ATA drive, NOT SATA.
